A rigorous mass and energy balance
with a clear understanding of inputs and outputs is recommended at the
beginning of any sustainable development improvement exercise, whether the improvements
be sought at an enterprise, company, national or global level
•The exercise conducted in this study
should be updated and consolidated as new data becomes available, so that there is a foundation for sharing
perspectives across the industry
•If the support exists, the study can
be extended to cover other metals, such as Cu, Pb and Zn, as well as industrial minerals and
fertilisers and aggregates to round out the analysis
•Economic and environmental factors can
be attached to input and output streams for performance monitoring or scenario planning, eg.
impact of a carbon tax or water rates etc
